The day trip out of Dublin

Dublin is where you sleep. The best days are three hours west.

The Irish coach day is its own institution: out at seven, across the country, back for last orders. Three routes carry almost everyone, and they are not interchangeable.

The long one

The Cliffs, the Burren and Galway city

12–13h· from $85· back by 8pm

West through the midlands, an hour on the cliff path, then the limestone moonscape of the Burren and a stop in Galway before the road home.

The short one

Glendalough, the Wicklow Mountains and Kilkenny

8–9h· from $37· half-day options

A monastic city in a glacial valley, the mountain road over Sally Gap, and a medieval town with a castle on the Nore. The easiest full day from the city.

The southern one

Blarney, the Rock of Cashel and Cork

11–12h· from $90· stone included

The great limestone rock at Cashel first, then the castle gardens and the stone itself, with a run into Cork city if the timing holds.

What Ireland is known for

The days Ireland is famous for.

The Atlantic cliffs, the black stuff at source, a distillery counter, the Kerry road, a castle with its own river, and a fiddle going in the corner of a pub. The handful of days most Irish trips are built around.

The signposted coast

The Wild Atlantic Way, north to south.

Two and a half thousand kilometres of coastline with a number on every signpost. Most visitors take a slice of it. These are the stretches with the tours.

Galway and the west

Galway is small. What it reaches is not.

A city you can cross in twenty minutes, with the Aran Islands off one shoulder and Connemara off the other. Tours leave from Eyre Square most mornings and are back before the pubs get going.

Dublin

Dublin rewards walking and an early ticket.

The Georgian squares, the Liffey bridges and the Book of Kells sit inside a square mile you can cross on foot. The queues are the only real obstacle, and they are all solvable the night before.

Only here

Things that only really happen in Ireland.

Castles and coastline you can find across Europe. A session that starts itself in the corner of a bar, a dog working a hillside on whistles, and a pony trap through a mountain gap belong to this island.

The session

Trad, Played Live

A session is not a concert. Musicians arrive with instruments, sit in a corner, and play tunes they all happen to know, and the room carries on around them. The organised shows get you a guaranteed night with dancers and a set list, which is the right call on a short trip. Galway and Dublin both run them nightly; the unbookable version is still going in the back bar afterwards.

Whistle and eye

The Working Sheepdog

On a hill farm the dog does the job a dozen people could not, moving a flock across open ground on nothing but whistles and hand signals. Demonstrations run on working farms in Wicklow, Clare and Connemara, usually bolted onto a day trip. It takes about twenty minutes and it is the part of the day people describe afterwards.

Iron shoes on tarmac

The Jaunting Car

Killarney still runs pony traps through the national park, and the drivers are licensed jarveys whose families have held the routes for generations. The Gap of Dunloe run is the classic: trap up through the pass, boat back across the lakes. It is slower than the bus and that is the entire point.

Rain is part of it

Ireland is green for a reason. Plan for the wet day.

The Atlantic sends weather across this island all year, and a forecast here is a suggestion. Nothing below cares what the sky is doing: a distillery counter, a cathedral nave, a crystal furnace, a museum, a room with a fiddle in it. Keep one of them in reserve.

Lock these in first

Book these before you land in Ireland.

Most of the island can be sorted from your hotel the night before. These cannot. They run on timed slots, a fixed number of coach seats and a season that ends.

  1. 01Dublin Book of Kells, Castle and Molly Malone Statue Guided TourTrinity releases the manuscript on timed entry. Morning slots are the first to go and there is no standby queue.
  2. 02Guinness Storehouse Entry TicketThe most-visited attraction in the country, on half-hourly slots. Weekend afternoons close out days ahead.
  3. 03Dublin to Cliffs of Moher, including Wild Atlantic Way and GalwayA coach day with a fixed seat count, and in July and August the Dublin departures fill before the week starts.
  4. 04Trad on the Prom Ticket with Irish Music and DancingA single nightly performance in a small room. When it is full, it is full.
